The Haunted House

When I was little, I lived in this apartment until I was 12. During the day everything was just peachy... but at night everything changed. Like any child I was afraid of the dark, but I had good reason to be. I was always afraid to turn off the lights because as soon as the lights would go off something was there, especially when I was buy myself. I mean when I was down stairs not much happened, but as soon as I touched the stairs it was there, especially from the upstairs down. Upstairs the light switch we had, had to be turned off around the corner of the stairs, so because I was so scared I would hold on to the corner of the handrail and reach for the light switch. As soon as I would flip the switch off I would pull myself toward the stairs and run down them as fast as I possibly could because as soon as the light went off something evil was hovering over me, I mean I could literally feel this thing breathing down my neck until I got to the bottom. And I had to go through this for 12 years. And next to that every night I would have really bad nightmares, even during the day when I would close my eyes I would see bad things happen and sometimes I still do. One night when I was upstairs alone, I was in the bathroom just sitting there on the toilet when all of a sudden I looked up and this nasty green hand with warts and long brown nails came up over the shower curtain really slow, stayed there for a few seconds, then went back down behind the curtain. I was so scared that I got off the toilet as fast as I could and ran down the stairs and told my mom. I refused to take a shower without someone in the bathroom with me for at least a couple months. But the weird thing about it was that the way the shower curtain was, was that you could see into the bottom of the tub and when I had looked... there was nothing there.” – Valerie, CA

Well I haven't actually seen, seen the ghost but its pretty obvious there is one in my house... Let me begin from the start. My family (mum, dad, brother and I) moved into this old house it doesn’t Look bad except for the peeling paint and for some strange reason the skirting board doesn't quite touch the ground in the living room.
I chose this room on the top level to be my room its old and its pretty obvious it was a little girls room at some stage, and that people could climb out the window if you wanted to go visit your boyfriend or if you
wanted to go to a party (okay maybe those are the reasons I chose the room). Well on my first night nothing spectacular happened except it getting really cold real fast, while my brother slept as snug as a bug in the next room. And constantly now my wardrobe door opening and closing during the middle of the night I used to think it was a draft causing the wardrobe to open and close until I saw it. It is a little girl I saw standing on the stairs all in black, I think it was a little girl but it definitely was a child staring at me as I was coming up the stairs after raiding the kitchen... And know at night you can hear if your in my room the sound of scratching coming from the walls around my bed it scary, I claimed it was rats when my friends came over but the truth is we fumigated the house before moving in and that poison should be able to kill anything living in those walls... So I know it wasn't rats... Then my friend told me that she had seen a little girl dead on the bottom of my stairs and that an old woman had gone missing from this house 40 years ago because her dad had lived next door when he was a teenager...” – Adeta, Oxford

I live in Swindon Wilts UK and about 11 miles away is a small town called Marlborough. On the outskirts of this town there is a house called 'Wolf Hall' in the house there is one room which is haunted. There are 2 parts to this story. Part 1: In the room there is a bed and some other furniture the people that lived there previously let people investigate the room and they found out that if you are a male and spend a night in the room at 00:01 you get violently thrown out of bed but if you are female you get a good night sleep. Part 2: The other part of this story is that if you move the furniture around, that over night it will be put back where it was before. The people that live there now wont let people investigate anymore but when they first got there they moved all the furniture out of the room and onto the lawn to be collected but when they went in the next day all the furniture was back in the room. The door now has a lock (put on by the people living there) on it and no one is allowed in the room.” – Phoenix, UK

This happened to a friend of my brother's. His name is Morgan. Anyway, Morgan and his parents like to go out on holidays and vacations and things like that, so in order to have a place to visit regularly they decided to buy a place out in the bushland down south. It was around five acres and dense bushland up there, quite chilly during winter, but not much wind because its inland. Morgan did not like the feeling of this place and his parents told
him to stop being a pansy- but, Morgan is a pansy. One day, while on a walk through the bush with his parents, the family came across a dilapidated house, like one of the first settlers’ houses that are just thrown together with the first bit of dry wood that can be found. Now, the family was unsure whether it was safe to go into, so they retreated back to the main house for the night. The next day, Mr. Bray, Morgan's father, visited the local council's heritage office. Apparently, an old farmer known around town as Freddy used to own that land around a hundred years ago, but was soon out of business with the unsuitable soil and with the squatters taking land from under his feet. So old Freddy and his wife and kids were in a spot of bother. It is assumed his kids died of natural causes; famine or snake bites. His wife is thought to have died soon after her brood of children departed from her. Maybe from grieving or wasting away. She died quite young, but Freddy was a battler and lived an estranged life as a hermit out in the bush, where the once cleared land grew strong and healthy and overgrown again. Minding his own business. News of Freddy got out from time to time due to the occasional squatter passing through and asking for food, but none much liked to do that because Freddy scared them a little sitting on his rocking chair and grinning his infectious grin to any passer by. It must have been quite a lonely existence, Mr. Brey said to his son, as Freddy died when he was quite an old man and still alone. Morgan was intrigued, so when his father asked him if he wanted to go down to the old hut and help fix it up, Morgan said okay. When they got there, Mr. Brey trudged up on the veranda and looked around. There was an old rocking chair next to a hanging lantern. Neither really looked the worse for wear, which was odd, because the house was being eaten by troops of white ants. Morgan went inside the house and found it to be a single room. 'Morgan!', his father called out. Morgan came outside and asked his dad what was wrong. 'Don't you think it's a little odd,' he began, 'that the lantern is swinging like that?' Morgan said, 'Uuh, dad, that would be the wind.' But there was no wind that day. There hardly ever is down there. A year passed and every time the family went up to the house to renovate and rebuild it, the lantern would swing to and fro, left and right. Morgan and his parents were talking about it one night and Morgan mentioned he thought it might be the ghost of Freddy trying to contact them. 'You know, you may be right,' said Morgan's dad, '-he was an old codger, and lonely but I won't stand for it anymore. It's annoying.' So a few months later when the family trekked down to the now finished hut to sleep out there for the first time, Mr. Brey sat in the rocking chair and looked up at the lantern. 'You know, Freddy, that is really starting to annoy me.' And to his surprise the lantern swung higher and higher and faster and faster. So Mr.  Brey stood up and yelled out to the lantern 'Freddy, stop it RIGHT NOW!' and the lantern stopped its swing mid-air and swung slowly back down to its normal position. Morgan swears he heard an old man laughing a high gruff bark, and fade away in the air. Morgan also reckons he's not scared of Freddy's ghost anymore, but I reckon that he didn't sleep that night at all.” – Liz, Western Australia

"We placed tape recorders all through the house and heard moans, screams and what sounds like dragging noises." - Cindy, AZ

"A few months back, there was a lot of bad feelings in my family. One morning my mother answered the phone. She had just woke up and didnt bother to check the caller i.d. The person on the other end said "Stay away from the window" then hung up. Given the situation, my mother called the police. They agreed to find out who had called. When they called us back several hours later, they said there was no call to our phone within two hours of that call. We passed it off as a mistake or anything, but we all stayed away from the window. That night around midnight, a bullet came through the window, right where we usually sit." - Casey, CA

"My mom told me this story about my uncle and his friend. I'm not sure if it is true or not, but here goes..oh, and I don't know my uncle's friend's name so let's just call her Karen.

One day a long time ago, my uncle went to his friend Karen's house to do a project. Karen had just moved in and the only people there were her, her younger sister and my uncle. After they started working on the assignment, her sister came running, saying she saw this old man walk past her. She said she's seen him before, but shook it off..now she was scared since he kept appearing. The young girl explained to Karen in vivid detail of what the man looked liked. Karen was a VERY good artist and drew a picture of this strange man, adding little details every day until she thought she had it. A little while later, she went to the library and researched her new, although very old in age house. Finally, she saw something about the house. Here's the freaky part - the picture of the man, which she spent forever drawing was in the book. The details..the looks were uncanny. It turns out that he was the one who lived there for years and years and years until he mysteriously died..the house was abandoned for a while until Karen's parents bought it." - Cate, MA

" In downtown London, Ontario, right on Wellington and Commissioners, there used to stand an old VA hospital. This was the hospital that veterans were sent to to convalesce after they returned from the horrors of war. The majority of vets would eventually find their peace and leave the hospital. Some didn't. The hospital had been abandoned in favor of a new building and it stood empty for years. Surrounded by a large lawn, no light from the busy streets surrounding it reached the building. Stories passed from person to person and soon it became a favorite spot for young kids and teenagers to break into on dares or just for fun. Some kids eventually got hurt climbing through the unsafe structure and they maintain that they were attacked by the spirits of veterans who still reside in the hospital. The city, not believing them but unwilling to risk more injuries, tore the old building down. Still, if you walk over the empty lot at night, be wary. The building itself may be gone, but the spirits who existed there for so long aren't at peace. They are angry that the place that was supposed to bring them peace is gone, and will take their anger out on any who trespass." - Sylph, Ontario

"In my hometown of Hillsborough, CA there is a place called Carolands Mansion. It's an abandoned huge mansion that had apparently been the first house ever built in the city. When I was in high school I heard a story that a couple of years before two girls had wanted to go inside and look at the mansion. The security guard that kept an eye on the abandoned mansion agreed to take them on a tour. He took them to a room that used to be a vault. Once inside he raped and murdered the two women. It's said that the spirits of the two girls still inhabit the vault." - Lucy, CA

"Have you guys ever heard of the Whaley House in Old Town, San Diego? It's apparently the most haunted house in the United States. I went there when I was little and was super creeped out." - Ben, CA

"In my town of Anaheim Hills, CA on a street called Mohler, there's this house that's completely enclosed by vines and is always dark and has old cars that haven't been touched and a random sheep that's still alive. It's been for sale for years and no one sees anyone come in or out of the house." - Heather, CA

"In Richardson, Texas there's a legend that a spirit haunts a local haunted house. Apparently it attacks girls, strings them up in the rafters and then the bodies mysteriously disappear. Some kids I know saw a body hanging in the cellar of that haunted house." - Richard, TX

"There's a hotel in Maribel, Wisconsin, 5 miles from where I'm from. This hotel burned three times each on the same date. On some nights you can still see the image of a young child in the upper windows who supposedly died in one of the fires!! They say this hotel is the portal to hell, hence the name 'Hotel Hell'. There's also another story that there are some natural springs under the hotel that are claimed to be the fountain of youth." - Chris, WI
