Haunted Cemeteries

I hang out with a group of friends who like to get freaked out. We go around to places that are said to be haunted, and pay the people who own them (unless it's deserted) to stay the night. One of my friend's in our group had just moved houses, and was in a new suburb when she heard a local legend that in an old church, a family of orphans, had all died mysteriously in the same night. She told us that if we visited the cemetery at exactly midnight, we would see the children slowly walking around the gravestones, trying to find their parents graves. My friend wanted to stay out of this, because she had already been down there and thought it was a hoax. The rest of my friends and I decided to leave my friends' house at 11:15, considering the graveyard was a fair walk away. When we arrived, we still had quite a few minutes to spare, so we sat down on one of the graves and started to talk. Suddenly, there was a noise in one of the nearby bushes, and we all hid behind some of the gravestones thinking it was the grave keeper. It turned out to be my friend who hadn't wanted to come; when we asked her why she turned up she told us that she didn't want to miss out on the fun. After a while of joking around and talking, I glanced down at my watch and noticed it was almost midnight. My friends and I formed a circle looking outwards so we could see the children when they appeared. One of my friends cried out and we all turned to see the children leaning over the gravestone we were sitting at, the eldest holding a lantern. It was as if they couldn't see us, and they hovered away from us as we heard someone shouting at us. This time it was the real grave keeper, so we made a run for it down some backstreet leading to my friends' place. True story.” – Emmie, NSW

"In a local Seymour, CT cemetery, out in the woods is a graveyard nick-named Hookman's Cemetery. Story has it that a few high school aged girls, after a night of drinking, took a ouija board to the cemetery and attempted to contact the spirit of the hookman. They made contact with what claimed to be a spirit that was killed in an accident on the lonely dark road that leads to the cemetery. He claimed he was trapped in hell, and needed to be released. The story then went that the spirit told the girls personal information no one else could have known. One courageous girl then asked for some kind of proof, and all four girls suddenly had bloody noses. They supposedly tossed the board out the window and never went back there again.” Mike – CT

I practice witchcraft(Wicca) with my friend, Willow and we went to the  local cemetery to see if there were any ghosts (and to meditate.) We sat  own and was minding our own business when we saw a man and a son enter the cemetery via the front creaky gate. We stayed there for around 10 minutes and saw the man and the son was still there walking around the tombstones. we turned to leave and the man and the son was gone. vanished into thin air. the only way out was through the creaky gate and there was no noise from the gate. pretty freaky” – Emily, Australia

"In my college town, there's a cemetary looking down onto the river valley. Inside, there's a statue of an angel standing over a sarcophagus. I'm told that when it was new, the statue was made out of brilliant white marble, but for the last 30 years or more, it's been coal black. Some frat guys I know tried to chip some of the stone off, to see if it was just stained. They got a chip off, but it was jet black stone all the way. The wierd thing was that when they went back later with some friends, the divit where they'd taken the chip was gone, even though they still had the chip in their frat house. My girlfriend's ex went in with some others one night to look at the statue. All 6 of them say they saw it moving. Not just the head, or the arms. They say it was walking around the stone coffin that it stands over by day. No one that I've heard of has ever gotten hurt by the thing. Some even consider it a good luck charm or something. Whatever, it's weird." - Tony, IA

"This is really gross, so sorry to anyone with a weak stomach. This woman goes to her doctor one day complaining of a really bad itch downstairs (if you know what i mean). so the doctor examines her and tells her that he will need to call the police because she has maggots in her privates. the doctor says the only way that could have happened was if the woman's husband had been having sex with dead people and then passed it on to her. the woman gasped then exclaims, 'my husband works in a morgue!'" - Bec, Victoria Australia

"Okay so here goes. In Canton, MI, there is a legend about an old road in the outskirts. On the corner of Gyde Rd and Ridge, old dirt roads mind you, there is an old cemetery. On Devil's Night 2002, a couple of friends and I decided it would be fun to check it out. The only story I ever heard was regarding the road. Your car stalls, heavy fog, weird noises etc, etc. My friends told me a different story. Supposedly if you stand in the cemetery for five or so minutes, a hearse is supposed to come to pick you up and take you to the "afterlife". I was like okay that could never happen. We headed North on Ridge from Warren road and parked our two cars a little down Gyde road and noticed a house next to the gates. We quietly got out of our cars and snuck through a hole in the gate. It was a smaller cemetery probably no bigger than 50 x 100 feet. We walked around a little with flashlights reading some of the headstones. They dated way back into the late 1700's. All of a sudden we saw headlights coming from down the road a ways. We turned off our lights and ran like hell thinking the house called the cops on us. We jumped into our cars and took off N on Ridge. We looked behind us and still saw the headlights. My friends truck was ahead of my car. We came up to Joy rd and our friend turned right. After we turned right, the car that was behind us turned left. As it was turning, we could see it was an old, old hearse. What was a hearse that old doing out around midnight on Devil's Night?" - Ann, MI

"There is a local legend around here that if you go to this cemetary and park in between two big trees and stay there for 10 minutes with everything turned off, and everyone stays silent, then you leave and go to a well lit area and there will be handprints all over your car. My sister tried this and she sees dead people(not kidding). She said there was a little girl standing outside her window and there were numerous other spirits all over the place." - Lindsay, Missouri

"A marble gravestone in an old deserted cemetery in West Virginia was the legend trip site for a particular group of young adults in the vicinity. The marble statue was of a seated lady, her hands outstretched to all that pass by the resting place. The legend stated that the woman in the grave had died of a broken heart when jilted by her fiancé. The legend trip was an initiation rite: new members had to spend the night sitting in the statue's lap. But the last time anyone tried this, the young woman who sat in the statue's lap met with a tragedy. The difference, you see, was that the young woman was a direct descendant of the fiancé! The next morning the young girl was discovered, still sitting in the statue's lap. She was dead. On her body were found marks as though she had been held in a superhuman clutch. Perhaps the seated lady had gained revenge." - Marjory, New York
